Octavio Getino

Octavio Getino, born 1935 in León, Spain, immigrated to Argentina in the early 1950s, is an Argentine theorist and film-maker who with Fernando Solanas co-founded the Grupo Cine Liberación school of Third Cinema. Their joint aim as cineastes was not primarily film art but the liberation of Latin America from its neo-colonial condition. Getino accepted an official post in the National Film Board during Juan Perón’s brief return to power, in 1973–1974. He transferred to Peru, after a military coup toppled Perón, where he worked in television in 1976, and later moved to Mexico to join the Film Department of the Universidad Autónoma de México, 1982. He and Solanas co-directed the influential underground film La hora de los hornos (The Hour of the Furnaces) 1968. Other films include El familiar (1973) and La familia Pichilín (1978).
