Daniel Herwitz is Director of the Institute for the Humanities and Mary Fair Croushore Professor of Humanities at the University of Michigan. He spent most of the 1990s at the University of Natal, Durban during the South African transition to democracy. Herwitz has published widely on the avant-gardes, justice and transitional societies. An earlier book on Husain (Husain, Tata Press, 1987) won a National Book Award in India.
